The course aims to present some basic elements of human, animal, and plant biology with the prospect of approaching and teaching topics related to the biological world in kindergarten and primary school. To this end, the course will offer perspectives on the research methodologies applied in the life sciences, and its social, technological, economic, and cultural implications.

By studying General Biology, the student will achieve the following learning objectives.
As regards knowledge and understanding:
-basic knowledge on the fundamental life processes;
- understanding of the principles of scientific analysis on biodiversity;
-basic knowledge of human biology, also from an anthropological point of view
As regards applying knowledge and understanding:
-ability to apply basic theoretical concepts to specific cases, in the prospect of presenting ideas and examples related to the life sciences in kindergarten and primary school.
As regards independent thinking:
-awareness on the methodological aspects of current research in the life sciences;
-awareness on the advancements on the scientific thinking in Biology and its cultural implications;
-awareness on the environmental, technological, economic implications of research and current knowledge in the life sciences
As regards communication skills:
- ability to present life science contents in an effective and conscious way, also using representations (drawing, images, diagrams) and natural objects.
As regards learning skills:
- ability to search and understand articles in peer-reviewed and grey literature, with the aim of updating and deepening personal knowledge on the life sciences.

Programma

The scientific method. Evolution, theories, and hypotheses. History of life on earth. The transition from single-celled to multi-cellular organisms. Fossils. Dating methods. Organisms. The classification of organisms. Systematics and Taxonomy. Scientific nomenclature. Characteristics of algae and fungi. Plants (Bryophyte, Pteridophyte, Spermatophyte). Invertebrate animals. Vertebrate animals. The cell. Microorganisms. The human body. Skeletal system. Muscular system. Digestive system. Circulatory system. Respiratory system. Nervous system. Immune system. Sensory organs. Reproduction and Mendel's laws. Proposals for teaching Biology in the field and in-class settings.

THE EXAM IS WRITTEN WITH FOUR QUESTIONS WITH A DIFFERENT DIFFICULTY: THE FIRST QUESTION IS SIMPLER AND LONGER, ON A GENERAL TOPIC, AND AS SUCH IT IS CONSIDERED FUNDAMENTAL: FAILING THIS QUESTION MEANS FAILING THE EXAM. THE SECOND AND THIRD QUESTIONS HAVE A MEDIUM DIFFICULTY AND LENGTH WHILE THE LAST QUESTION IS SHORT AND RELATIVELY HARDER. THE FIRST QUESTION GIVES YOU 18 POINTS, THE SECOND AND THIRD QUESTION GIVE FIVE POINTS EACH WHILE THE FOURTH QUESTION GIVES YOU TWO POINTS.
